Rams Struggle in the Field Against Fermi

The Rockville High School baseball team drops one to Fermi, 7-3.

The Rockville High School baseball team dropped a home game to Fermi on Thursday, 7-3, at Henry Park.

The Rams held a 3-1 lead over the Falcons going into the top of the third before Fermi got two runs on RBI singles by Jeff Kraucunas and Chaz Millett to tie the game at three.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Rockville defense began to struggle with ground balls and wild throws.  Alex Zachary and Joe Bowker scored off an infield hit by Millett who was safe on second after a wild throw from the Rockville defense.  Fermi would end up getting four runs in the fourth inning and that would be enough for the Falcons to hold on for the win.

Rockville coach Art Wheelock was not pleased with his team’s performance on defense after the game.

“I wouldn’t say I’m frustrated, but I’m not very happy with the way we played on defense,” said Wheelock. “We got out-pitched, out-hit, and out-played today.  In the third and fourth innings, it was like a snowball effect.  Then after that, it’s hard to come back from four runs down.”

The Rams got all of their runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Kurt Annelli, Kevin Babcock, and Taylor Botteron each had an RBI for the Rams.  Babcock went 3 for 4 with two singles and an RBI double.

The starting pitchers were Annelli for Rockville and Kraucunas for Fermi.  Rockville pitcher, Bryan Leonard, came in for the top of the seventh to relieve Annelli.

Rockville (7-5) next plays at Newington on Friday at 3:45 p.m.  Fermi (5-4) will also play on Friday at Southington for a 4 p.m. game.
