Rockville Friendly's Property Sold to Local Group

The sale price was $200,000.

One of the most visible vacancies in Rockville has a new owner.

The former Friendly's restaurant at 172 Union St. was purchased this week by a holding company called 172 Union Street LLC., based locally.

The property was acquired for $200,000 from the previous owner, Newington-based Gauvitis and Gauvitis, LLC, according to the real estate conveyance tax return for the land.

Economic Development director Shaun Gately said the owner listed the 1,800-square-foot property as a leasing opportunity on Friday.

The closing took place on Monday.

Gately said the new owner will come forward once a plan is in place to refurbish the property, which has become overgrown in the seven years the building has been vacant.

The Rockville Friendly's had  been on Union Street since 1961 and was closed in 2005 after the chain deemed it underperforming. It was considered small and outdated by modern Friendly's standards.
