Subs Come Through for RHS Girls Tennis Team

Freshmen mount a wild comeback to take their match - and the team match.

Rockville High School girls tennis coach Carol Hartmann did not exactly get a welcome sight when she arrived at the Ram tennis courts on Monday.

Two starters were sick, and she had to post a lineup.

Then, she saw something with a nostalgic twist when Wendy Weston and Katherine Cutting were warming up.

When I got to the courts, I saw Wendy practicing with some other girls, ''Hartmann said.  ''I saw things I hadn't noticed before - her serve, the way she gives the ball back to the other side of the court, just the way she had control of the ball, and the way she moved during the points.

''So I put her in the lineup to give it a shot. After the match, I found out that Katherine and Wendy were longtime childhood friends. Sometimes things somehow find the right place. With both being freshmen, I have some plans for the future.''

The Rockville girls had a pair of wins and Rocky HIl had thee wins with two matches still in progress. At No. 4 singles, Rockville's Nicole Ciampa split the first two sets with Claire Laing, 6-3, 2-6, then rolled through the third, 6-1 to tie the overall team match at 3-3.

That left Weston and Cutting at No. 3 doubles. The first two sets against Mary O'Sullivan and Lorette O'Conner were lopsided, 6-2, 1-6 and they found themselves down love-5 and an add-out in the third.

Cutting hit a winner that she later said turned the match around, and she and Weston they went on to win the set - and the match - 7-5.

''They played great together,'' Hartmann said.

In singles, Meagan Donahue of Rockville defeated Sydney Greenspan of Rocky Hill 6-2, 6-4;  Hannah Hilton of Rockville defeated Kendyl Tabsrey of Rocky Hill,  6-1, 7-5;  and Aassta Ravat of Rocky Hill beat Julie Granger of Rockville, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

In doubles,  Rocky Hill's Lexus Tabshey and Christina Pergolizi defeated Meagan Leopard and Pam Graves of RHS, 6-1, 6-3;  and Ankita Patel and Lean Skully of Rocky Hill beat Sara Shane band Kassandra Wemmell of RHS, 6-4, 6-2

Rockville is now 3-4 and plays at East Hartford today.
