Vernon Fire Marshal Posts Burning Regulation Reminders
The Vernon Fire Marshal's Office is reminding the public of the local regulations for legal and safe open burning.

VERNON, CT — As the weather turns warmer, the Vernon Fire Marshal's Office is reminding the public of the local regulations for legal and safe open burning.
Two types of outdoor fires are allowed in Vernon:
1. The burning of brush on a resident’s own lot with a written permit issued through
the Vernon Fire Marshal’s Office.
Permits may be obtained by calling 860-870-3633 to request an in-person
appointment at the Building Department/Fire Marshal's Office, 55 West Main St. The
cost for this permit is $50. All such fires must conform to all conditions of the written
permit. The maximum diameter of the wood being burned is 3 inches.

2. A recreational fire burning clean, dry hardwood in either:
a) A covered container with a wire mesh screen having no larger than 1⁄4 inch by
1⁄4 inch openings.
b) An approved incinerator. This must be 10 feet from buildings and property
lines.
c) A fireplace or pit for the purpose of cooking food.
