Tributes have been pouring into the VFD social media outlets this week. Here are a few:

  • "Thank you Smokey I didn't know you , but I'm thankful for you watching over us."
  • "Some of my favorite childhood memories involve Smokey and hanging out in the firehouse. He would always sneak me candy and tell me stories about calls with my dad. He lived a life of service and set an example for all of us."
  • "He was a kind and gentle person and a great and dedicated fireman. I'm sure the old Rockville horn and clacker system is sounding wherever he is."
  • "Smokey was a staple."

Dreher joined the fire department on Aug. 14, 1950. Services were still being planned Wednesday.

"Volunteer firefighters play a special role in so many communities across our state and nation," Town Administrator and Emergency and Risk Management Director Michael Purcaro said. "At a moment’s notice they drop what they are doing and rush to handle a fire, crash or other incident. Smokey gave more than 70 years of service for Vernon. That is truly remarkable, and we are grateful."
