VERNON, CT — Vernon officials are issuing a stern warning about disposing ashes in town-issued trash and recycling carts.

"Under no circumstances are ashes to be disposed of in the refuse and recycling carts," town officials said. "Sparking embers are a fire hazard."

They explained that wood ash retains enough heat to ignite other combustible materials for several days.
