VERNON, CT — Vernon police are investigating a case of a wrecked road sign on Center Road.
The sign was discovered at about 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Center Road and Crestridge Drive. Center Road connects routes 83 and 30 in the center of town and large commercial trucks are advised not to use it as a cut-through.
Neighbors at first thought the crash was a crack of thunder but then discovered a sign had been run over. It was laying on the sidewalk with muddy tire tracks around it. The casing for a turn signal was also sitting on the sidewalk. A private yard was also damaged.

The sign is there to warn motorists heading downhill about an upcoming curve. It appeared a vehicle had been traveling up the hill, toward Route 30. It appeared the vehicle crossed lanes, hopped a granite curb and took out the sign.
Police said it was difficult to tell if it were a case of distracted driving or speeding. The Vernon Department of Public Works was notified, police said.
