Vernon Softball Team Gets Big Win in Sectional Play

The finbal pool game is slated for Tuesday.

The Vernon 11/12 softball on Monday hit its way to a 7-3 victory against Columbia SFC in pool play of the state Little League Section 2 tournament.  

Vernon is now 2-2 in Section 2 competition. Morgan Bolduk was the winning pitcher. She allowed three hits and struck out four to improve her tournament record to 5-1.  

Vernon took a 1-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning when Columbia SFC pulled ahead and scored three times.

Down 3-1, the Vernon offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs, three of them coming off of Morgan Bolduk's inside-the-park three-run home run.

The homer drove in Shannon Skivington and Sarah Silver. 

Lauren Honan, Monica Bolduk and Tiffany Cosgrove also scored in in the inning. Hits for Vernon in the fifth came off the bats of Monica Bolduk (a single, her third hit of the game), Tiffany Cosgrove's (a hard single to the outfield) and Chelsea Chatterton (an infield hit on a short dribbler). 

Vernon stole seven bases during the game, led by Monica Bolduk's three, Chelsea Chatterton's two, and one from Sarah Moss and Morgan Bolduk.

Defensively, Vernon made several key plays throughout the game. At second base, Chelsea Chatterton threw a runner out at the plate on a force play with the infield in with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. She also had an unassisted play at first base in the sixth inning on a grounder.  

In the fourth inning, both Chatterton and shortstop Sarah Silver made solid plays on consecutive hitters.

Shannon Skivington made two strong throws from center field to hold runners at third and Alyssa D'Allesandro anchored the defense from behind the plate.

For Columbia SFC, Alyssa Lambert had seven strikeouts and allowed six hits.  Kim Ladd, Alyssa Lambert, and Kaitlyn Gifford had hits for Columbia SFC.  Megan Habakangas, Kaitlyn Gifford, and Jordan Mihak scored for Columbia SFC.

Vernon faces Rocky Hill Tuesday night in East Lyme at 5:30 in its final game of Section 2 pool play.
