Vernon's Center Road School Celebrates Native American Culture

Projects and food were part of the event.

VERNON, CT - Students celebrated Native American culture this week at Center Road School.

Projects were on display depicting every day life. The students also participated in traditional Native American games.

It was all part of an extensive study segment on Native Americans.

A big hit at the event was a sampling of Three Sisters Soup cooked up by fourth-grade teacher Peg Wilde based on a recipe from The Woodlands Nations.

With a qualifier of, "Don't worry about the exact measurements," here is the recipe.

  • Turkey or chicken thighs.
  • 5 cups white corn (yellow is passable too).
  • 3 cups rinsed kidney beans.
  • 1 cup cooked pumpkin or squash.
  • 3 quarters water or vegetable stock.
  • Several sage leaves, chopped.
  • Salt a teaspoon at a time to taste.
  • 1 small onion, chopped.

Gently boil the thigh in liquid for about an hour until the meat breaks away from the bone. Remove to cool and discard the bones.Add the corn, beans and onion. Boil gently 15 minutes and add the sage, squash abs salt. Add more liquid if the soup is more like stew. A crock pot is also an option.
