Vernon's Teacher of the Year a Semifinalist for State Teacher of the Year

Local students were tops in state writing awards last year.

VERNON, CT — Vernon's teacher of the year is a semifinalist for that distinction at the state level.

Vicky Nordlund confirmed she is in the running Thursday morning. She is the creative writing teacher at Rockville High School and the 2016-17 school year is her 27th.

Rockville High School students won 142 writing awards at state state level in 2016-16, the most of any school in the state. Her students also picked up six national medals.

Nordlund is scheduled to be interviewed by a state panel on Sept. 16 and if she moves onto the finals, a state panel will visit RHS, she said.

"I am honored and humbled," Nordlund said. "But at the same time I am so happy for everyone on our team, because it is a reflection on all we do at Rockville High School."
