Claire Janowski is stepping down after a 16-year run at the Capitol.

VERNON, CT - The Vernon Democratic Town Committee on Wednesday chose longtime Town Council member Michael Winkler as its candidate for the 56th District seat in the state House of Representatives.

State Rep. Claire Janowski (D-Vernon) is leaving the House after 16 years.

She nominated Winkler by saying, "Mike is an excellent choice. He has a wealth of experience and knows the needs of our district. He will be a strong voice for us at the legislature and will serve the people of our town well."

Board of Education member Laurie Bajorek seconded Winkler’s nomination, and Winkler's Town Council colleague, Ann Letendre, sent a seconding message, read by Winkler’s wife Phyllis, that desribed Winkler as, "a friend and neighbor," who is, "a kind, friendly and open person who likes a good laugh," but also as "a dogged defender of democratic principle who will serve us well in the General Assembly."

Addressing a crowd that included Janowski’s General Assembly predecessors Chet Morgan and Thomasina Clemons, Democratic Town Chairman Bill Dauphin said Winkler is the "ideal choice to continue a legacy of excellence in the 56th District."

"I’m looking forward to an exciting and successful campaign," he said.
