11 Businesses Fail Alcohol Compliance Checks: Wallingford Police

WALLINGFORD, CT — Several clerks were cited and 11 businesses face penalties from the state after failing alcohol compliances checks, which were conducted on July 3 and July 5, according to Wallingford Police. A 19-year-old worked with police and entered 13 stores and attempted to make an alcohol purchase. The 19-year-old was successful in 11 stores and was never asked for identification or their age, according to Lt. Michael Colavolpe.

“After the 19-year-old made the purchase, detectives spoke with the clerks who provided excuses ranging from ‘I forgot,’ ‘The person provided identification,’ ‘I checked, they were 22 years old,’ ‘I was busy,’ ‘They appeared old enough,’ or they did not ask or check,” Colavolpe said in a press release. The clerks who made the sales were cited for selling alcohol to a minor and given a summons to appear at Meriden Superior Court on July 14, according to Colavolpe. In addition, each business was referred to the State of Connecticut Liquor Control Division where they could face penalties ranging from a fine to a suspension of their liquor license.

Two of the stores checked, The Liquor Mart located at 612 South Colony Road and Discount Wine and Spirit located at 71 North Turnpike Road asked the 19-year-old for identification. When the 19-year-old informed the clerk that they did not have identification, the clerk refused the sale, Colavolpe said.

The stores found not in compliance are:

• One Stop Liquor, 900 South Colony Road
• A & D Package Store, 38 South Turnpike Road
• Goodrich’s Package Store, 321 Quinnipiac Street
• Wally Wine & Spirits, 71 Quinnipiac Street
• Yalesville Package Store, 413 Main Street
• Wine Kingdom, 1211 South Broad Street
• Empire Wine & Liquor, 1145 North Colony Road
• Wine Merchants, 994 North Colony Road
• CT Beverage Mart, 1070 North Colony Road
• Ives Road Wine & Spirits, 20 Ives Road
• Black Hills Wine & Spirits, 41 North Colony Road
