New Tax Rate Set In Wallingford After Council Cuts Budget
The Town Council amended the adopted budget after receiving unanticipated funding from the state.

WALLINGFORD, CT — Just weeks after failing to approve a budget, which put Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr.’s proposed budget into effect, the Town Council amended the adopted 2018-19 budget this week to nearly eliminate a tax increase, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.
The Record-Journal reports the recently approved state budget gave Wallingford $2.45 million more than Dickinson had been expecting and the council also cut about $600,000 in spending to reduce the tax rate from 29.35 to 28.61 mills (a 0.21 percent increase over the current year). Under the previously adopted budget, the average homeowner would have paid an additional $143 over the current year but that amount has now been cut to an $8 increase, according to the Record-Journal.
The town’s Law Department is reviewing the legality of the council cutting the additional $600,000 from the adopted budget, believing it lacked the authority to do so, the Record-Journal reports.
