History of the American Whaling Industry

Wallingford Public Library presents a documentary and discussion of the American whaling industry.

Wallingford Public Library is presenting the documentary film Into the Deep: America, Whaling and the World on Wednesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m.

The documentary depicts the history of the American whaling industry from its 17th-century origins in drift and shore whaling off the coast of New England and Cape Cod, through the golden age of deep ocean whaling, and on to its demise in the decades following the American Civil War. Fans of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and Nathanial Philbrick’s In the Heart of the Sea should take note. Following the film, Local residents Scott Gray and Sonya Wulff will moderate a discussion focusing on the issues of ocean sustainability and conservation.

A follow-up to this program will take place April 2 at 6:30 p.m. when Mystic Seaport’s Chris Freeman will give a presentation of the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan. Please contact the library at 203-265-6754 or online at wallingfordlibrary.org for additional information. Advance registration is appreciated.
