More Coronavirus Cases Reported At 3 Wallingford Schools

As coronavirus cases rise "significantly" in Wallingford, officials reported additional cases at three schools on Thursday.

WALLINGFORD, CT — The Wallingford Public School District reported confirmed cases of the coronavirus at three schools on Thursday.

Officials notified families that individuals at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School, Lyman Hall High School and Mark T. Sheehan High School tested positive for COVID-19.

“In working with the Wallingford Health Department, it was determined that the COVID-19 confirmed cases at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School and Lyman Hall High School were not in close contact with anyone while in a school setting,” officials wrote in a message sent to parents. “However, the COVID-19 confirmed case at Mark T. Sheehan High School was in close contact with one or more people while in a school setting.”

Anyone who was identified as a close contact has already been notified by officials.

The school district has had 49 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 12 staff members and 37 students, as of Nov. 5, according to Superintendent Salvatore Menzo.

“The cases in town have risen significantly in the past week,” Menzo said in a message to parents. “We continue to work daily with the Health Department on contact tracing and planning. We continue to be confident in our mitigation strategies in schools. Our staff has been diligent in cleaning classrooms and high touch surfaces while maintaining mask wearing and handwashing.

“The challenge continues to be the staffing impact due to the quarantining of close contacts. We are working very hard to keep schools open while balancing what is instructionally the best for our students. I cannot thank you teachers enough for their flexibility in these challenging times.”
