The skies have cleared but there will be no swimming at Wharton Brook State Park today.
The state DEEP announced that the Wharton Brook swimming area is closed for Wednesday, June 24 because storm water runoff from this week’s rain elevated bacteria.
Water quality is tested by DEEP to ensure that it is safe for swimming. Samples are collected by DEP staff and are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab.

Local health departments are responsible for sampling municipal swimming areas. For information on closures of local swimming areas contact the local public health agency.
Indicator bacteria are not disease causing pathogens, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies, according to the DEEP.
