Obituary: Luis R. Cruz Sr. (Big Rey), 60, of Wallingford

Luis R. Cruz Sr. (Big Rey), 60, of Wallingford, died December 8, 2019. He was born in Cidra, Puerto Rico, and is the son of the late Jaime Cruz Sr. and Francisca Cruz.

Luis moved to Connecticut during his early childhood and attended local schools. He was known as an outgoing individual, making new friends at every turn. There is not a single person who can say that Luis hadn't had some type of positive effect on their life. From making jokes, smiling, and helping those who needed him, Luis' charisma and personality will be forever remembered by all friends and loved ones.

Luis loved spending time with his family, telling many stories of his childhood in Puerto Rico and growing up in Wallingford as one of the few Puerto Rican families. Luis loved working in his yard, tending to his plants, growing vegetables, and staying busy while taking in the sun to work on what he called his “year-round tan."

He is survived by his wife, Deborah A. Bubier, his son, Luis R. Cruz Jr and wife, Tylynn, and his daughter, Stephanie Cruz. Luis’ legend will be continued on in this life through his three grandchildren, Devin L. Cruz, Amarra L. Cruz, and Romeo J. Cruz.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the spring in Center Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to his family, c/o Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford, CT 06492.
