July 5th Democracy & Religion Observed: Tocqueville's Early American Republic Worship Leader: Bob Reutenauer

After several years of touring the United States in the 1830’s, Alexis de Tocqueville’s published insights on our rising democracy are foundational to modern political philosophy. How can a society that promotes and rewards individualist and materialist advances, seemingly above all else, also sustain vital community? He discovered that the answer to this and other related questions could be found in new religious practice as much as in new political practice. Let’s consider our UU Principle, “The Right of Conscience and the use of the democratic process,” as we celebrate Independence Day weekend.
