Wallingford To Keep Ballot Collection Boxes Inside Town Hall

Other nearby towns and cities have installed the ballot drop boxes outside for the upcoming primary election, according to a report.

WALLINGFORD, CT — Unlike nearby municipalities such as Cheshire, Meriden and Southington, Wallingford plans to keep its ballot collection boxes inside Town Hall, according to the Meriden Record-Journal. Those municipalities each received two ballot drop boxes through the federal CARES Act as the state expands absentee ballot use for next month’s primary election during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Record-Journal reports other towns and cities have installed at least one drop box outside, however, Wallingford Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. plans to keep the drop boxes inside Town Hall due to security and vandalism concerns.

Critics said keeping the ballot boxes inside Town Hall limits accessibility since the building’s doors are locked and the drop boxes will only be accessible during weekday business hours when someone is available to open a door, according to the Record-Journal.
