Wallingford Library Lays Off Staff, Considers Closing Branch
The Wallingford Public Library has laid off 20 workers and is considering closing the Yalesville branch, according to a report.
WALLINGFORD, CT — The Wallingford Public Library has laid off 20 part-time staff members and is considering permanently closing the Yalesville branch, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.
The Record-Journal reports the layoffs are the result of the reduced revenue and increased expenses due to the library’s closure amid the new coronavirus pandemic. Officials are hoping to bring back as many staff members as possible when the library reopens.
Officials said the Yalesville branch at 400 Church St., which is housed in an 1,862-square-foot 84-year-old building, is so small that it would be difficult to maintain adequate social distancing, according to the Record-Journal. It could also be affected by the reduced income.
