Wallingford Man Injured in Wrong-Way Driver Accident on I-95 in Milford: State Police

The accident led to the highway being shut down for 1.5 hours early Monday.

MILFORD, CT — A Stratford man was allegedly driving the wrong-way on Interstate 95 in Milford early Monday, which led to himself and another motorist suffering injuries in a three-vehicle crash, State Police said.

State Police said at 4 a.m. on I-95 around Exit 40 Joseph L. Benjamin Jr., 46, of East Orange, New Jersey was driving his tractor-trailer in the center lane and Joseph G. Dwyer, 54, of Forest Road in Wallingford was traveling north of Benjamin's tractor-trailer in the left lane. Dwyer was riding in a United Illuminating Co. vehicle, according to a news release.

Rufino Dominguez, 25, of Allyndale Drive in Stratford was traveling the wrong way in the left lane directly ahead of Dwyer's vehicle, State Police said. Dwyer tried to steer around the vehicle and drove into the median shoulder, State Police said.

Dominguez's vehicle front right corner hit Dwyer's vehicle and the impact caused Dwyer's vehicle to strike a concrete median barrier and it came to a final rest in the left lane, State Police said.

The impact caused Dominguez's vehicle to roll onto its left side and come to a final rest in the right lane, State Police said, while adding his vehicle rolled across the entire lane in front of Benjamin's tractor-trailer.

Benjamin tried to avoid Dominguez's vehicle and struck Dwyer's vehicle on the left rear corner with the ride side of its trailer, State Police said.

Both Dwyer and Dominguez were hospitalized with minor injuries. State Police are continuing to investigate. The highway was shut down for 1.5 hours Monday morning.
