Wallingford Mayor Proposes Tax Increase for 2016-17

Despite the increase in the tax rate, Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. says homeowners could pay less due to a recent revaluation.

WALLINGFORD, CT — Wallingford Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. has proposed a $158.27 budget for fiscal year 2016-17 that carries a 1.53 percent increase in the tax rate.

However, Dickinson said that due to a recent revaluation, in which the average residential property assessment decreased by about 4 percent, some property owners will pay less in taxes while some will pay more, according to the New Haven Register.

Dickinson told Luther Turmelle of the Register that the revaluation has shifted the tax increases to commercial and industrial properties.

The average residential property owner will pay about $142 less in taxes than this past year, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.

In his proposed budget, Dickinson reduced the Board of Education’s budget request by about $2.1 million, which represents a 2.32 percent increase over the current spending plan, according to the Record-Journal.
