Wallingford Student Recognized As Winner In eesmarts Contest

More than 100 students submitted projects to the statewide contest promoting sustainability, energy efficiency, and clean & renewable energy

WALLINGFORD, CT — A Wallingford middle school student was recently honored as a winner in the 17th Annual eesmarts Student Contest.

Gabriella Ruby, a seventh-grade student at Moran Middle School, won second place for her poem entitled “Global Warming: A Poem Demonstrating How Much Global Warming Affects Our Earth.”

At the end of the poem, she challenges everyone to “use clean energy, turn off the lights, ride a bike, so that Earth’s future is bright.”

Presented by Energize Connecticut in partnership with Eversource and United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas, subsidiaries of AVANGRID, Inc., the eesmarts Student Contest invites Connecticut students in grades K-12 to showcase their energy smarts.

Participants were able to choose from a variety of project formats, based on their grade level, including poems, essays, news articles, book reviews, posters, photographs, speeches, public service announcements, community-oriented projects, and more.

More than 100 students from 20 schools in 16 Connecticut communities submitted their work for consideration. Twenty-five entries were selected as this year’s winners, and each finalist received a prize box with a gift card and certificate.
