Wallingford Residents Speak Out Against Tree-Cutting Plan

The town plans on removing 38 pear and oak trees along Center Street.

Wallingford residents spoke out against the town’s plans to remove 38 pear and oak trees along Center Street at a public hearing Friday, according to the New Haven Register.

The Register reports that about 24 residents attended the hearing, many of which were concerned about a repeat of this past spring when the town removed 28 pear trees on Quinnipiac Street.

“What we’re upset about is that people aren’t listening to us,” Carole Golitko told Luther Turmelle of the Register. “The trees really do add to downtown. We don’t need a concrete jungle.”

Public Works Director Henry McCully will review the residents’ comments and issue a decision about whether to move forward with the wholesale cutting of the trees on Center Street by the end of the day Monday, according to the Register.
