Water Supply Alert Issued in Wallingford

Officials are asking Wallingford residents to voluntarily conserve water due to low reservoir levels.

WALLINGFORD, CT — Officials are asking Wallingford residents to voluntarily conserve water in order to help ensure an adequate supply to meet essential needs. The Wallingford Department of Public Utilities announced this week that it is issuing a Water Supply Alert.

The alert precedes the four-step Staged Drought Response Plan, which is defined in the town’s Emergency Contingency Plan.

The plan requires the issuance of an alert when either the reservoir storage or the three-month rainfall average drops below the historical average by a defined amount, according to a press release. The alert is in response to the fact that on Dec. 2, the town’s reservoir levels had reached the trigger point defined in the plan.

“In spite of recent rainfall events, our reservoir levels are below historical levels, due to the below-average precipitation for the year, including the prior winter with little snowfall,” Director of Public Utilities George Adair said in the press release. “If rainfall amounts do not increase and we do not take steps now to reduce water consumption, the reservoir levels will continue to decline. In the Water Supply Alert stage we request that customers be mindful of their water use, limit unnecessary water usage and take voluntary measures whenever possible to reduce water consumption. The voluntary program is a cautionary signal to our customers that total available water supply is less than its historic level.”

Wallingford Water Division customers can conserve water by taking shorter showers, running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads, shutting off the water while brushing teeth, shaving and washing hands and minimizing outdoor water use. The Water Division also recommends that home and business owners repair any leaky plumbing fixtures, particularly toilets, and replace fixtures with low flow devices.

Taking steps now to be water-conscious and to avoid wasteful use of water will help in the event the dry conditions persist. The Water Division appreciates its customers’ ongoing efforts to conserve water.
