The Big One, an annual tournament marking the start of the collegiate fencing season in the northeast occurred at Smith College, Northampton, MA last Saturday. An all-day event involving over 400 fencers, the tournament encompasses all three fencing weapons; foil, epee, and saber. Waterford graduate, Colleen Mason (2009), fencing for Sacred Heart University, placed 5th in women’s epee, competing against fencers from NCAA teams; Brown, Tufts, Vassar, Boston University, MIT, Brandeis, Wellesley, Boston College as well as club teams.
Other Eastern Connecticut fencers who also competed included; Cooper Johnson (Bacon 2011), Jannelle Gagnon (Bacon 2011), Austin Walker (Ledyard 2011), Won Choi (Norwich Free Academy 2011), Cameron Gephard (East Lyme 2010), Gabby Garifano (St. Bernard 2010), and Tianchi Xu (Waterford 2008)
The Waterford High School Fencing Team will kick off its fencing season with a home competition on Saturday December 17th between Griswold, East Lyme and Fairfield.
