Lightning Strike Brings Down Power Line In Waterford: PD

Residents were advised to stay away from the area as police and fire dealt with the situation.

WATERFORD, CT — Police said Parkway South in Waterford was closed between Gurley Road and Cross Road to traffic Tuesday night after an energized power line was brought down by a lightning strike. Residents were advised to "please stay away from the area" as police and fire dealt with the situation.

Police said on Facebook the road would be closed for "a minimum of four hours" and residents were subsequently alerted early Wednesday morning that power lines had been restored and Parkway South was open to traffic.

Police also posted a video of a fire that seemed to be caused by the downed wire.

The lightning strike came as a brief but powerful storm brought heavy rains to the region. A tornado watch was issued late Tuesday afternoon in Fairfield County, and the National Weather Service is currently investigating if the area saw a tornado touch down Tuesday evening.
