1. 2 Waterford High School Students Named National Merit Semifinalists (patch.com) — Waterford residents can celebrate two Waterford High School seniors, Michael Chuchev and Ethan Wang, who have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, placing them among the top 1 percent of U.S. seniors. They'll now compete for a share of $24 million in scholarships by submitting detailed applications, essays, and test scores, with winners to be announced next spring.
   

2. $20M in state funding announced for Harkness Memorial State Park improvements (fox61.com) — Waterford residents are set to benefit from $20 million in state bond funding to upgrade Harkness Memorial State Park, including Eolia Mansion, gardens, walkways, and parking areas. Additional money will improve accessibility at Camp Harkness and support renovations at the Montville VFW, following advocacy by local leaders and community groups.
   

3. Coyote Wanders Into Home's Basement, Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Says (patch.com) — A coyote recently wandered into a basement in the Waterford-East Lyme area after the homeowner left it open to air out following flooding. Animal Control says the animal eventually left on its own, and they're reminding residents to secure basements, remove outdoor food sources, and avoid approaching coyotes to prevent dangerous encounters.
   

4. Killingly, NFA open football season against defending state champions (norwichbulletin.com) — Waterford High's football team opens its 2026 season at home tonight against Griswold/Wheeler in an ECC interdivisional matchup, with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. The Lancers debut new head coach Pat Dougherty and look to reach the state playoffs for a third straight year, leaning on an experienced quarterback and home-field advantage.
