WATERFORD, CT — A fund for retired police K-9 officers has been set up at the Waterford Police Department thanks to a generous citizen's donation.

According to the department's Facebook page, the fund was set up by Waterford resident Scott Rogers, who also heads the Rudy’s K9 Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to providing equipment and care for retired Waterford police K-9 units.

Police said Rogers wants to ensure that care for retired K-9's are not solely the responsibility of the police officers partnered with them.

"When a police K-9 retires, the handler picks up all of the vet bills for the dog," police said on Facebook. "Thanks to Mr. Rogers, that will no longer be the case, and he plans to continue this fund for the foreseeable future."

Police expressed extreme gratitude for what they described as "truly an amazing and kind gesture."

The fund was set up on the heels of K-9 Ike's recent retirement from the department on March 1. Ike served the department for eight years. He will now retire "in style" and live with his handler, Officer Dan Lane, and his family.
