Scam Call Reported in Waterford
The fraudulent caller promises residents a monetary prize and later asks for a smaller amount.

The Waterford Police Department has issued a warning to residents about a new telephone scam.
The alert comes after a local resident reported he received a call from a man who said his name was Eric Johnson and claimed to work for the government. The caller told the resident that he had won $9,180 for being a “good citizen.”
The caller informed the resident that he would have to give some of the money to his community as well as wire $180 to a Western Union in Washington before receiving the prize money.

The Waterford Police Department warns residents to not “fall for this one” on its Facebook page. The caller’s phone number was 202-657-5633.
A Google search for the same phone number shows several posts describing a similar scam. The phone number comes up as “Level3 VolP” and is located in Hyattsville, Md., according to a reverse whitepages.com search. The search also includes a note saying, “heavy spam activity is suspected.”

Waterford police say no one has fallen for the scam yet on their Facebook page.
