Waterford Police Warn Residents Of Possible Phone Scam: PD

Waterford police are warning residents of a possible phone scam recently reported by a town resident.

WATERFORD, CT — Waterford police are warning residents of a possible phone scam recently reported by a town resident. Police said the resident reported having received a call from a man asking for donations in the name of the Waterford Police Department.

The phone number that came up on the resident's caller ID was 860-447-1456, which police said is a number assigned to the department’s bank of numbers. Police said the man claimed to be from the department twice, however he did not know much about the department when asked further questions.

According to police, neither the department nor the Waterford Police Union solicit money by phone. Residents are asked to simply hang up if they receive a call from someone saying they are affiliated with Waterford police asking for money or any other personal information.

Police said residents can always call the department back directly to confirm legitimacy of a call. They also remind citizens the technology is out there to change phone numbers on caller ID systems, increasing the likelihood of these types of scams.
