6th Grade Boys Basketball Team, 1st Place in Avon Tournament

The West Hartford 6th grade, boys travel basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a first place finish in the Avon Invitational Basketball Tournament. Led in all statistical categories by Jack Krugman, the WH Cagers finished the tournament 3-0, with one tie.

WH Cagers 35, Farmington 23

Jack Krugman led the Cagers to open the tournament with 12 points, 6 steals and one spectacular around-the-back pass for an assist. Tyler Marino and Krugman led the Cagers on the boards with five rebounds each. Will Fox contributed 5 points, as did Ethan Lavalley, who played the entire weekend with just one good hand. Point guard George Andrews guided the Cagers throughout the game, and the weekend, with his steady play.

WH Cagers 29, Bristol 26

In a comeback win over Bristol, Krugman led the Cagers with 8 points and 13 rebounds. Dan Hussey knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to spark the the second-half comeback. James Travers drove the defensive effort pulling down 6 rebounds and securing two steals while guarding Bristol's top scorer. Solid defense from Tyler Marino (6 REB), Brian Puleo (2 steals) and Jack Tousignant (2 steals) secured the win.
 
WH Cagers 33, Avon 33

In a back and forth game, the Cagers and Avon tied 33-33. The game was called at the end of regulation due to time restrictions. Brian Puleo (6 PTS) guided an early run with his solid man-to-man defense against Avon's top player and early fast break points. Will Fox was the top scorer with 8 points, and Krugman, Jaden DiMauro and Gabe Salomons led the undersized Cagers in rebounding. James Travers took the lead on defense, sharing with Puleo the matchup against Avon's top player.

West Hartford 39, Somers 30

Sparked in the first half by Jaden DiMauro's 6 points, the Cagers secured another comeback victory. Gabe Salomons controlled the boards in critical stretches (7 REB), while point guards George Andrews and Jack Tousignant controlled the tempo throughout the game against half and full court pressure. Will Fox stepped up on defense in the second half, guarding Somer's talented point guard. Krugman had  9 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Cagers play next in the Southington Invitational Tournament, November 29-December 1.
