Connecticut Senator Could Be 'Viable Threat' For Trump In 2020 Election: Report

As the Trump administration looks toward a 2020 reelection, one Connecticut senator is seen as a viable threat.

As the Trump administration continues through its first month of running the country, White House staff are already looking at potential foes in the 2020 election, and one Connecticut official has emerged as a "viable threat," according to a published report.

White House chief strategist Steve Bannon was recently informed by consultants that Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy is a leading opponent who could pose a threat to the president’s reelection, the New York Post reported. Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown could also be a leading threat.

Murphy is seen by the administration as a viable threat who could quickly raise money and build a network of supporters, according to the New York Post. The freshman senator has taken issue with a number of Trump’s decisions over the past month.

Murphy made headlines last summer after mounting a 15-hour filibuster regarding gun control in the wake of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, one of the 10 longest in US history.

The senator spoke to Patch in June about the filibuster and was asked then if he had any desire to run for president. At the time, Murphy said he did not have any aspirations for higher office.

“My desire is just to do this job for as long and as well as I can,” Murphy told Patch. “I want to do the job with dignity and passion. I certainly think about my kids, but just as importantly I want everyone else in the state to be proud of the job that I am doing. I think about that a lot.”
