As the Jewish Holiday of Passover approaches, the Chabad of Greater Hartford has announced plans to host two open-to-the-public Family “Seders” in three location locally.
Membership is not necessary and all are welcome, adults and children alike.
“Our goal is to make this celebration accessible and meaningful to all who wish to partake,” said Rabbi Joseph Gopin, Executive Director of the Chabad Center.
Known as the “Festival of Freedom,” the biblical Holiday of Passover commemorates the miraculous Exodus of the Jewish People from the ancient land of Egypt. It is a time dedicated to family and community gatherings. This year, Passover begins on Monday, April 18th.
The traditional festive meal, known as the “Seder,” incorporates many interesting rituals. From the eating of the Matza (hand baked flatbread, imported from Israel by Chabad), to the drinking of four cups of wine or grape juice (Kosher, of course); from the dipping of vegetables in saltwater, to the consumption of bitter herbs – everything has a special significance. Then of course, there is the delicious, full-course meal.

In addition, the “Haggada” – an ancient textbook which chronicles the Passover story – is read. At Chabad’s Seder, the Rabbi will lead the reading in Hebrew and English, coupled with participation from participants. “We envision this as being an interactive event,” said Gopin. “We encourage people to think of the Holiday in personal terms, adding meaning to their lives.”
The Family Passover Seders will be held on the first two first nights of Passover, Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19.
