Executive Chef of Bricco's Conducts Workshops with Third-Graders at St. Thomas the Apostle
The St. Thomas the Apostle School community recently welcomed KC Ward, Executive Chef of Bricco Restaurant in West Hartford Center to conduct two workshops with their third grade classes. In the first workshop, Mr. Ward and his wife Jaime, who are parents of two St. Thomas the Apostle students, focused on the elements of taste, healthy food choices and farm-to-table meals. Students learned about and sampled the different aspects of taste, discussed how these are important in cooking, and prepared a no-bake, gluten and nut free granola bar. The second lesson addressed “Eating a Rainbow.” Students participated in an “Iron Chef” activity where they made an allergen free pasta salad using fresh, colorful vegetables, many of which are grown in the school’s garden. The winning recipe was available at the school’s Farmer’s Market on Friday, June 13th. The Farmer’s Market was sponsored by Growing Great Schools, an organization committed to creating a culture of wellness by connecting children with sources of fresh local food, gardens, and physical activity. Both Mr. Ward’s visit and the Farmer’s Market, complemented science and health curriculums at St. Thomas the Apostle School, and also promotes their mission of growing the whole child: mind, body and spirit.
