Firefighter Hopefuls Sought In West Hartford: WHFD

As the WHFD conducts its first-ever youth firefighter summer camp, the department has announced a fall recruiting push.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Those looking to be a firefighting/paramedic will soon be able to look to the West Hartford Fire Department, which is slated to embark on a fall recruiting drive to add to its ranks.

West Hartford Firefighters Local 1241, the WHFD's firefighters union, announced that the town's paid fire department is looking to fill vacancies and it anticipates more.

The union said more information is upcoming about a future information session.

Meanwhile, the WHFD is looking to test prospective firefighters/EMTs and it will establish a list of hopefuls in the fall.

The announcement comes as the WHFD is hosting its inaugural "Summer Youth Fire Academy," which aims to encourage young people aged 12-16 to look into careers in firefighting and emergency medical services.

In partnership with the Town of West Hartford's Leisure Services Department, the firefighter camp is taking place at the Elmwood Community Center and it is being taught by WHFD firefighters.

The first day of this camp was Monday.

"Campers will be getting hands-on training giving them a unique experience as well as an understanding for the fire service career path," wrote the WHFD firefighter union.
