Following Drunken Incident, Connecticut Alderman Steps Down from Leadership Role
Michael Trueworthy allegedly asked the mayor for alcohol, called her names and said he would run for mayor.
An alderman in New Britain allegedly confronted Mayor Erin Stewart in a drunken fit, telling her she should leave office.
The alderman, Michael Trueworthy, has stepped down from his position as the president of the New Britain Board of Aldermen, according to NBC Connecticut, after news of the incident spread.
Stewart told police she didn’t feel threatened and she didn’t want to press charges.
Trueworthy acknowledged he’s an alcoholic, according to WFSB, and he said he is seeking help.
Reports say Trueworthy contacted Stewart several times on July 22 before he came to her office. He allegedly asked her for alcohol, called her names and said he would run for mayor. When police arrived, friends were helping Trueworthy to get home, and they said he seemed unsteady and smelled like alcohol, according to NBC Connecticut.
But Trueworthy was later seen at West Side Tavern, and witnesses told WFSB that he demanded shots and beer.
“When the bartender cut Trueworthy off, the owner said the alderman started using homophobic slurs,” WFSB reported.
Trueworthy has apologized and NBC Connecticut reports he will remain an alderman.
