Free Diabetes Workshops Available For West Hartford Residents

The program starts Feb. 25, with sign-ups ongoing right now.

WEST HARTFORD, CY — A free, seven-week virtual workshop designed to help residents manage Type 2 diabetes will begin Feb. 25, West Hartford health officials announced.

The series will be led by registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist Paula Kellogg Leibovitz and is open to individuals newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or those seeking updated guidance on managing their condition.

The program is offered through the West Hartford-Bloomfield Health District and will run on Wednesdays from Feb. 25 through April 8.

Participants may choose between a daytime session from 10 a.m. to noon or an evening session from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Classes will be held on Zoom.

Topics will include meal planning using the plate method, introductory carbohydrate counting, reading nutrition labels, monitoring blood glucose, setting blood glucose and A1C goals, understanding diabetes medications, exercising safely, and managing illness.

The workshop includes opportunities for questions and discussion during each session. Materials will be mailed to registered participants before the series begins.

The workshop is funded through a grant from the Connecticut Department of Public Health.
