Hall High Pops 'n Jazz Welcomes Marcus Printup on March 16

Jazz Up Your Friday Night with Marcus Printup and Hall High Pops 'n Jazz Extravaganza

Trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Marcus Printup will be the featured artist at the March 16 performance of the 60th annual production of Pops ’n Jazz at William H. Hall High School.

Hall Pops ‘n Jazz 2018 is excited for the opportunity to perform with the talented Marcus Printup. After being introduced to world renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis in 1991, Marcus was invited to join the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra where he’s been a member since 1993. He has had the honor of performing on multiple Grammy award winning albums there. In addition, he has performed and recorded with Betty Carter, Diane Reeves, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliff Gordon, Marcus Roberts among many others. Marcus has led multiple recordings on several major record jazz labels – Blue Note Records - Song for the Beautiful Woman, Unveiled, Hub Songs. Nagel Heyer Records – The New Boogaloo and several on Steeplechase Records including his latest Young Bloods.

Mr. Printup is in demand as a facilitator/educator for clinics and masterclasses for Middle Schools, High Schools, and Universities around the world. He’s an educator at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition and an adjunct faculty member at the New School in Manhattan. Marcus and his wife Riza published their first children’s book and arragements for big band and jazz band combos, and released their first jazz single for children. Pops ’n Jazz 2018 features more than 100 student performers and opens March 9, with additiobal performances March 10, 15, and 17. Doors open at 7 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30p.m. Hall’s Concert Jazz Band recently won first place in the Class L2 Division at the Berklee School of Music Jazz Festival in Boston on February 10, 2018, and has qualified as one of 15 bands nationally to compete in the 23rd Annual Essentially Ellington Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center in May. Hall’s Jazz Band placed 2nd in a different division at the Berklee Festival. Also performing will be Hall’s Jazz Combo, Jazz Dancers, Choraliers (jazz singers), I Giovani Solisti, and actors. The program, which varies slightly each night, offers an array of American jazz classics from all eras, performed in big band and combo settings, highly choreographed jazz productions, and featured solo performances. The show is known for its eclectic blend of music, ranging from traditional and progressive jazz to pop-rock and Broadway.

In addition to Printup, guest artists this year include a number of Hall Pops ‘n Jazz alumni - Kris Allen (sax) and Joseph Fierberg (vocalist) on March 15, and Richie Barshay (drums) on March 17. Participation of guest performers is supported by the Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Memorial Charitable Trust.
