Human Medications Most Toxic to Your Pets

Did you know that approximately 25% of all calls to ASPCA are because owners fear their pets ingested human medication?  There’s an actual helpline for Pet Poison called Pet Poison Helpline.

The most important way to prevent your pets from ingesting something harmful is to identify and remove hazards from their environment.

• Do not leave pills or bottles within reach of your pets
• Always contact your veterinarian or poison control/helpline if your pet has ingested any medication not prescribed for them;
• Never give your medication (or any medications prescribed for a two-legged family member) to your pet without first consulting a veterinarian.

 List of Human Meds Most Toxic to Pets

 Pain relievers like Advil, Tylenol, Motrin and Aleve or Tramadol (vets prescribe this, but only at the low dosage appropriate for your pet’s weight)

1. Heart Medication like Cardizem or Cartia
2. Muscle relaxants like Lioresal, Flexeril or Anti-anxiety likeClonazepam
3. Sleep aids (e.g. Ambien, Lunesta, Klonopin or Xanax)
4. Antidepressants (e.g. Zoloft, Cymbalta, Effexor, Venlafaxine)  WARNING: For some unknown reason, cats love to eat Venlafaxine capsules. Ingestion can cause agitation, vocalization, tremors and seizures – call your vet or poison control immediately if you suspect your pet ingested any of these drugs.
5. ADHD/ADD meds (Ritalin, Adderall or Vyvanse).
