Intensive Education Academy in West Hartford Celebrates New School Year

School for students with special needs ages 5 to 21 opened its 43rd year last week.

The Intensive Education Academy, a school in West Hartford for students with special needs aged 5-21, celebrated its 43rd year last week by welcoming students from more than 30 towns in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

Each student at IEA benefits from his/her own IEP (Individual Education Plan), customized by Academy faculty, each of whom is certified in special education with various areas of focus. The Academy’s customized education plans as well as its caring, peaceful environment, ensure its students, who are diagnosed with any one of a number of learning or health impairments, receive the best available education encompassing not only learning but social skills. A five-to-one student-to-faculty ratio and small classroom setting ensures each student receives the attention and resources they require to be successful.

Students learn about IEA via their parents, specialists, pediatricians, and from their home school districts. Over 2000 students have passed through IEA’s doors since its founding in 1971.

Matt Enright, Physical Education and Health Teacher at the Intensive Education Academy, welcomes students arriving by bus on the Academy’s first day of school last Wednesday. The Academy has served special needs students from 30 towns in CT and western MA since 1971.
