Kingswood Oxford's Wyvern Contends for USA Today's 'Best Mascot in CT' Honors

Kingwood Oxford's mascot, the Wyvern, is one of five Connecticut high school mascots in contention for USA Today's "America's Most Unique High School Mascot" distinction.

The Wyvern is described as: "a legendary creature with the head of a dragon, wings, talons of an eagle, two legs with a tail of a snake and breaths poison. The origin is from the Old French wyvern, which means both viper and life."

The contest is described as: "Where else can you get potential matchups of Hillbillies vs. Poets, Cornjerkers vs. Unicorns, Feet vs. Orphans and the Poca Dots vs. anyone? USA TODAY High School Sports is letting the fans choose the best high school sports mascot in the country, from A (the Auks in Delaware) to Z (the Zizzers in Missouri)."

The contest began Monday. "There is no limit to the number of times a person can vote as long as the Best Mascot Rules are followed," according to the USA Today website, and anyone age 13 or over can vote.

The field currently includes 255 schools – five per state and Washington D.C. - in the state round, which ends at 3 p.m. ET March 5, according to the website.

The remainder of the contest will proceed as follows: "The 51 winners will advance to the second round, where they will be divided among six regions. The regional round will begin at 11 a.m. ET March 6 and ends at 3 p.m. ET March 14. The six winners then will compete in the national round, beginning at 11 a.m. ET March 15 and ending at 3 p.m. ET March 25."
