“I want our elderly homeowners to get what they deserve. I don’t want anyone to miss out only because they were not aware of the opportunities that exist for them,” West Hartford Assessor Joseph Dakers said.
Dakers said first-time applicants can receive assistance from staff members during the application process.
“The application process is simple,” Dakers said. “For first-time applicants, our friendly staff will meet with you and review all your documents, look at the property record card, and then determine right then and there which programs you qualify for.”
The amount of tax relief varies based on income.
The minimum benefit is $150 for both single applicants and married couples. The maximum benefit is $1,000 for single applicants and $1,250 for married couples.
Required documents include a 2025 Social Security 1099 form, a complete 2025 income tax return or all 1099 forms if no return was filed, rental income receipts if applicable, and W-2 forms if applicable.
In addition to the state programs, West Hartford is accepting applications for its Local Elderly Homeowners Tax Freeze Program through May 15.
To qualify for the local tax freeze program, residents must be at least 70 years old as of Dec. 31, 2025, and must have owned and occupied their West Hartford property as of Oct. 1, 2025.
Applicants also must have lived in Connecticut for at least one year before applying and meet the same income limits as the state tax relief programs.
Eligible residents who qualify for the local tax freeze program will have their taxes frozen at the amount due for the 2025 Grand List, payable in July 2026 and January 2027, according to the assessor’s office.
Residents approved for the local freeze program must renew every two years.
The town said participation in the local program does not affect eligibility for other available tax relief benefits.
Applications and additional information are available through the town assessment office website.
