Kingswood Oxford to Host CT Appellate Court Arguments on May 2

The Connecticut Appellate Court will travel to Kingswood Oxford School on May 2 to hear two criminal cases as part of the Court’s annual “On Circuit” program.

The “On Circuit” program, an educational initiative that began in 1996, is intended to provide students, educators and the public with a greater understanding of the Court and its role and procedures. The arguments, which are open to the public, will be held in Roberts Theater.

Appellate Court Judge Stuart Bear is coordinating the visit. “I am very proud to join my colleagues, Judge Christine E. Keller and former Supreme Court Justice Barry R. Schaller, at the Appellate Court session at Kingswood Oxford School,” he said. “We are grateful to KO for hosting this event, and we hope that viewing these proceedings will give the students a greater understanding of the appellate process in Connecticut.”

“We are pleased, honored and feel privileged to be hosting the Connecticut Appellate Court,” said Head of School Dennis Bisgaard. “Our students and faculty have been preparing for this visit for several weeks and are excited about the opportunity for an ‘up close and personal’ look at the judicial process.”

Judge Bear will serve as presiding judge for both cases. The first case, State v. Dontay Eavon Early, will be heard at 9:40 a.m., and the second case, State v. Kyle Peterson, will be heard at 10:50 a.m.  Arguments in each case will last approximately 40 minutes.  A question-and-answer period with counsel from the case and Kingswood Oxford faculty and students will follow each argument.

News media organizations may record, broadcast, televise or photograph the arguments in accordance with Section 70-9 of the Connecticut Practice Book and the Court’s protocol.  Please note that the protocol requires media outlets to make pooling arrangements among themselves if there are multiple camera requests after the arguments.  Please also note that requests to videotape or photograph the question-and-answer period after the arguments should go through the school.

Judicial marshals will screen everyone entering the auditorium, and bladed or pointed items, weapons, food and beverages are not allowed.  Guests are requested to not bring in briefcases, backpacks or large bags.
