Kingswood Oxford's Lina Volin Is Presidential Scholar Candidate

KO student is one of about 3,900 candidates chosen from among the 3.4 million high school seniors in the United States.

Kingswood Oxford senior Lina Volin has been nominated for consideration as a U.S. Presidential Scholar, a prestigious designation in a program established by the U.S. Department of Education in 1964.

The daughter of Valeria and John Volin of Glastonbury, she is one of about 3,900 candidates chosen from among the 3.4 million high school seniors in the United States.

Nominees are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities.

At KO, Volin is clearly all of those things. In addition to being a Martin-Nicholson scholar, a member of the Cum Laude society, and consistent honor roll student, Volin is also the co-president of Forensic Union (and represented KO at a World Championship competition in Lithuania last year); a managing editor of the KO News; an All State flutist; and a member of the Executive Committee of the Shield & Dragon tour guide group.

Last summer, she participated in a language internship program in Jordan and is currently studying Arabic through KO’s membership in the Global Online Academy.

“Lina is respected and valued by faculty and peers for her love of learning, her multifacted impact on student life, and her strong principles, concern for others, and quick yet gentle sense of humor,” said Peggy Clark, her college counselor.

A panel of educators will choose 560 semifinalists in early April, and the Commission on Presidential Scholars -- a group appointed by the President -- will make the final selection of the Scholars in May.
