Komen Connecticut Announces 2014 Hartford Race for the Cure Chairs

The Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is pleased to announce the Chairs for the 2014 Hartford Race for the Cure. Steve and Sherri Rice of Avon and Cheryl Udin of Bolton have been appointed Chairs for the Race which will be held in Bushnell Park on June 7th.

Sherri and Steve began with Komen because their lives have been impacted by the disease, Steve’s grandmother and Sherri’s mother were diagnosed with breast cancer. They have been fighting breast cancer across the country with Komen since 1998. Now that their two daughters are old enough to participate, Race day has become a family activity they all look forward to each year.

Cheryl, a 26 year breast cancer survivor has worked with Komen as a way for her to help other survivors whose lives dramatically changed, just like hers.  After her first Komen event, she was so wrapped up in the activities and special treatment of the survivors, she knew helping Komen Connecticut was going to be extremely important to her.

The Chairs agree the most rewarding feeling is meeting survivors, hearing their stories and watching participants of all ages form a sea of pink.  “It’s an empowering event. Racers, walkers, survivors, volunteers are gathered for one cause, to help find a cure for breast cancer, by contributing their time, energy, money and voice,” says Cheryl.

“Everyone has been impacted by breast cancer in one way or another. Breast cancer even affects men” said Steve, “Komen Connecticut keeps 75% of all funds locally and invests 25% in research, so you are really fighting for your community.

Komen Connecticut supports local breast health programs across Connecticut and to find the causes and cures for the disease. Over the past four years, Komen Connecticut has granted approximately $1 million annually to local organizations providing lifesaving services for women in need across our state.  Programs include the Hartford Hospital Mobile Mammography program, a Spanish-speaking support group at the Hispanic Health Council and patient navigation services at Saint Francis Hospital, among others.

Sherri adds, “Share in the excitement of those that have won, support those who are dealing with the disease now and honor those that fought the disease but did not win.”
