Nuclear Nightmare Funds OK'd In West Hartford
The West Hartford council has approved a $115,253 grant for local emergency centers needed should disaster strike Waterford nuke plant.
WEST HARTFORD, CT — Should disaster arise down on the shoreline due to the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in Waterford, West Hartford will be there to help folks out.
That's because the town is a designated "host community reception center" and, according to state plans, it will host displaced persons should a nuclear disaster strike the shoreline area community around Millstone.
And, following the West Hartford Town Council vote Thursday, the town is $115,253 richer to make good on a promise local leaders hope they never have to follow through on.

Councilman, as part of approving its consent agenda July 14, unanimously said "yes" to a $115,253 grant award courtesy of the State of Connecticut's Department of Emergency Management and Public Protection, which manages the state's nuclear safety emergency program.
The matter, originally, was a regular agenda item, but the council opted to lump it into the consent agenda for a quick voter of approval. No discussion was rendered about the grant.

Should the nuclear reactor at Millstone boil over into an emergency requiring evacuations, West Hartford will be a location inland for evacuees to go to.
The newly accepted grant will pay for upgrades to emergency shelter areas in town, including heating and cooling centers and reception centers.
Funds would be folded into the West Hartford Fire Department budget for supply and equipment purchases for 2022-23.
