Folks who see me (I am easy to spot, wearing a black varsity jacket with Advanced Chiropractic logo) roundabout town usually ask me a question or two about a specific health problem they are experiencing. One such problem that folks ask about is numbness and tingling in their arms and hands. The following is a conversation I had with a perspective patient.
Ben: Are you a chiropractor?
Dr. Chris: Well, I do something a little bit different than traditional chiropractors, I focus on structural correction which is a branch of chiropractic that focuses on one area of practice.
Ben: I didn't know there was a difference between chiropractors. Well, I have been having numbness and tingling off and on in my hands for a few months now, do you think it's _________, or _______, or maybe this___________?
Dr. Chris: Ben, your skull maybe shifted anterior relative to your thorax, which in simplier terms means the vertebra in your neck may have shifted forward so that, rather than having your skull positioned over the center of your body, it's shifted forward putting a great deal of stress on the bones, discs, nerves, ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the cervical spine -aka the neck.
If a house is not resting on its foundation, could that result in a series of problems? Could that shift cause the walls to crack...the floors to squeak...the windows to get stuck, etc?
Ben: Sure, I suppose so.
Dr. Chris: Ben, should we fill in the crack in the wall, put another nail in the floor, and put some WD-40 on the window, or should we FIRST check the foundation and the frame of your house and correct any issues that may exist?
What makes the most sense? Most healthcare providers focus on the symptoms. When the symptoms have been addressed, the conditionis no longer an issue. Meanwhile, what do you think will happen to the walls, the floor, and the window if we don't focus our attention on the foundation, which as we both KNOW, is the underlying cause?
Ben: That makes sense.
Dr. Chris: Ben, very nice to meet you and have a Happy New Year.
