Residents Speak Out Against Plan to Build Dog Park in West Hartford

Previous attempts to build a dog park in West Hartford have failed and about 12 residents from the Buena Vista neighborhood spoke out against the latest attempt in a meeting with town leaders on Thursday, according to the Hartford Courant.

The West Hartford Dog Coalition met with officials on Tuesday to present a plan to build a dog park on two-thirds of an acre of town-owned land on Cornerstone Drive between the Cornerstone pool and Buena Vista golf course.

Thursday was the opposition’s turn to have its say.

Sherry Haller, president of the Buena Vista Neighborhood Association, questioned why the town would put a dog park in the “most, or one of the most, densely populated recreational spots in the town?,” according to the Courant.

The coalition pushing for the dog park has said the project would be entirely funded by donors at no cost to taxpayers. The town owns the property and officials would have to be co-applicants to any proposals brought to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Mayor Scott Slifka and town council Minority Leader Denise Hall have formed a committee to study the dog park issue with no formal timetable on the project, according to the Courant.
