West Hartford – For the past 12-years, Saint Brigid School (SBS)has celebrated the scientific curiosity of their junior high school students by encouraging their participation in the annual Dr. Timothy Gerne Memorial SBS Science Fair.
Students in grades sixth through eighth, competed for the coveted first, second, and third place awards in their respective grades. In memory of Dr. Gerne, the overall winning project was recognized with a monetary award and their names engraved on a plaque located in the science lab. The top two overall winning seventh or eighth-grade students or teams will go onto represent Saint Brigid School at the 2014 Connecticut Science Fair held at Quinnipiac University in March.

This year, Mary Rosati, the daughter of Dr. Gerne presented the overall winning award to eight-grade students and team members, Nicole Mealha and Julia Wiener; for their scientific experiment on the competitive strength and value of various brands of toilet paper. Their counterpart, seventh-grade student and first-place winner Dylan Errico, will also join them at the 2014 Connecticut Science Fair. Errico will present his experiment on the various types of planting material best suited for growing seeds.

Here is the competition list of winners: Overall winners and teammates, eighth-grade students, Nicole Mealha and Julia Wiener; eighth-grade winners: Mia Giraud first-place, Abbey Obeng and teammate Lucy Hyelim Min, and in third place Aaron Gray.
Seventh-grade winners are: Dylan Errico, first-place; Eric West, second-place; and teammates Yoshika Tsuruki and Melanie Cohen in third-place.
Sixth-grade winners are: Chloe Lerch, first-place; Evan Thompson, second-place; and Youngbin Lim in third-place.
Jennerfer Bernaiche, faculty member and science fair team leader, worked in conjunction with her colleaque Melissa Seidl, in implementing the 2014 Dr. Timothy Gerne Memorial SBS Science Fair.
"Totally impressed with the level of in-depth study our students put into their projects. All of the science projects were great. They did an outstanding job of putting together and analyzing their data," commented Bernaiche. "I feel strongly our students will do well in the statewide competition, too."
